All Stars dominate 1st WNMAC

BAGUIO Arnis All Stars Inc. came out as the runaway champions in the arnis event of the recently concluded 1st All Women’s National Martial Arts Competition held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, Manila held April 24.

With their 11 gold, five silver, and six bronze medal haul, arnisadors representing the Summer Capital once again had the bragging rights in the competition backed by the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission (POC-PSC).

Norielyn Sagun of Baguio City National High School shined with the most medals from the all-female squad earning six gold medals coming from the anyo events.


Sagun outclassed participants coming from the different parts of the country after sweeping the single weapon, double identical weapon, sword and dagger, and one gold in the full contact contest.

Sagun also teamed up with Danica Caw-is and Jana Kaye Balicdang to top the synchronized single weapon, synchronized double identical weapon, and synchronized sword and dagger events.

The Baguio Arnis All Stars, headed by coach Jayson Vicente, also generated five gold medals from the labanan (full contact sparring) contest courtesy of Balicdang, Frannie Lupae, Aleva Botigan, and Gigi Anton.

Lira Achachang bagged one silver and one bronze from the labanan and individual single weapon events respectively, as Kristen Tamiking added two silvers and one bronze, while Florentina Pascual earns a silver medal in the labanan contest.

Meanwhile, Jannesa Gutierez, Corina Ado, Athena Mantias, Micah Mandapat, and Rikka Ramirez each bagged bronze medal apiece.

Nine other martial arts discipline were featured in the one-day event including boxing, judo, fencing, taekwondo, wrestling, wushu, pencak silat, muay thai, and karate-do.

The first ever gathering for Filipino women martial artists showcased talents including children as young as 12 years old and said to be an extended the celebration of the Women’s Month.
