SAINT Louis University Laboratory High School relied on their tough defense to stop Cordillera Career Development College – High School and advance to the finals of the 2014 Coca-Cola PBA Young Stars-Baguio Leg.

SLU-LHS finished CCDC-HS squad, 84-55, at the University of Baguio Cardinals gym Tuesday afternoon.

Carl Ochabilla, Avin Daniel, and Tristan Tangalin led the junior cagers from SLU generating 18, 17, and 10 points respectively.

"We are happy that we are able to dominate the semi-finals knockout game, the boys did well defending the ball and it is a big factor including the rebounding efforts of the tall ones," said SLU-LHS coach Marlon Pawid.

Pawid added he is more concerned on their finals match-up against highly touted University of the Cordilleras Laboratory High School-Team B.

"Our concern entering the finals would be our opponents. We are the underdogs here and I guess if we can pull out with the victory it will be enough to add to our bragging rights," Pawid said.

"A lot of their players are quite veteran, in our team, I guess only two can be counted since most of our recruits are rookies with less experience especially dealing with a five-man team set-up," Pawid added.

SLU enjoyed a 23 point lead, 43-20, at the close of the first half as Ochabilla, Daniel, and Tangalin chipped in 25 points after a 23-12 edge at the close of the first period.

CCDC then tried to stay within striking distance at the break of the third canto with Mark Chinayo, Jayson Alvaran, and Reydan Asiong stepping up their performances for a 55-39 deficit, with 4:53 remaining.

But the SLU dribblers remained focused in closing the third quarter with a 20 point bubble, 63-43.

Asiong led CCDC with 17 points while Alvaran and Justin Wagner added 15 and 11 points respectively.

A total of ten teams from Baguio City participated as the competition supervised by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas tipped-off April 21.

The winner in the leg will advance to the North Central Luzon Championship and will compete with other champions from Pangasinan and Pampanga before advancing to the National Finals.
