FIFTY of Baguio City’s best persons with disabilities vie for top honors as the 2014 Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled (PhilSpada) – National Games kicks off on May 16-25.

Coinciding with the 2014 Philippine National Games, hundreds of ParaGamers from all over the country compete in the different sports meet during the ten-day meet to be held in Metro, Manila.

City Sports Coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said the city has allotted at least 50 slots for the PWD athletes representing their respective sport events.

“The annual regular slot na ibinibigay natin sa mga PWD athletes natin is 50, this year we are trying to keep into consideration of maybe adding more since we are encouraging our ParaGamers to have a basketball team,” Gonzales told Sun.Star Baguio.

Gonzales meanwhile said the Summer Capital will also send more than 200 delegates to the 2014 National Games.

“So far we are officially enlisting 220, including chaperones and coaches. Kaya rin tayo nag-aalot ng extra slots for the PWD since minsan meron sa kanila talagang kailangan ng kasama to look after them,” Gonzales said.

Sports competitions to be participated by PWD athletes include swimming, bowling, athletics, and archery.

Early in January, Baguio based ParaGamers and archers Allan Campos and Agustina Bantiloc represented the country in the 7th Association of Southeast Asian Nations ParaGames held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, where Bantiloc hit a bronze medal while Campos ranked among the top 10 male marksmen.

According to the budget earmarked by the Baguio City Sports Office, a total of P1.5 million will be used as expense for the 2014 PNG and PhilSpada competition.

"We are somewhat lucky here in Baguio since we are allowed to include in our annual budget proposal those kind of expenses. Sa ibang mga provinces although meron din sila mostly last minute na sila hinahanapan,” Gonzales said.

"Right now we are still finishing the list ng entries nila sa PhilSpada Nationals, hopefully they will do good and earn some honors not only for the city at the same time para sa sariling accomplishment na rin nila," Gonzales added.
