TEAM Codalian leaned towards their key players in a do-or-die ballgame against Noble Trends Unbound advancing to the semi-finals in the bracket C of the 8th Panagbenga Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Rey Gabino led the scoring for Codalian with 29 big points while Joven Caleño padded it with another 24, to upset NTU 98-91, during their match-up at the Easter College gym Sunday evening.

“We were lucky to win kahit pa kulang kami tonight, we hope to do better sa semis dapat maging mas-focused ang mga players lalo pa at magagaling na rin talaga ang kalaro namin.” said Codalian playing coach Orville Wankey.

The coach added the team does not see to gain an easy access into the finals.

“Malaki kasi ang factor na wala yung ibang teammates namin, although we can project good starting line-up kung kukulangin naman we always shrink down the stretch,” Wankey said.

“Saka minsan we cannot blame them but the game is always depending on the referee’s call, katulad tonight muntik pa na kami ang ma-eliminate,” Wankey added.

Trailing behind the competition, the Codalian squad claimed the lead in the last three minutes of the second period after Caleño together with Vic Nuñez dropped down 16 combined score to close the first half 53-43, NTU down by ten.

The NTU ball agents tried to bounce back at the start of the third canto behind Gwenn Garlejo and Allan Intervalo commanding the floor, but Gabino stepped up dropping 12 straight points to keep Codalian in front at the third buzzer, 75-67.

The call center agents tried to hold on until late in the pay-off period but Codalian continue to generate momentum as Gabino, Caleño, and King Pascual chipped in another 18 points putting the victory in tow for Codalian.

Pascual closed out with 14 points as Nuñez scored ten including seven rebounds.

Garlejo led NTU with 25 points, five steals, and three rebounds, while teammates Intervalo and Karlo Badenas added 22 and 21 points, respectively.
