LA UNION College of Nursing, Arts and Sciences poured in the much needed points when it mattered the most and toppled erstwhile league leading Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes in the open bracket of the 8th Panagbenga Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament.

The San Fernando based dribblers managed to score a 79-74 win during the weekend to halt the Dukes winning streak in Sunday’s game at the Easter College gym.

"Maganda naman ang naging performance ng team kahit pa during the first half medyo manipis ang tawag ng mga officials, but all in all happy kami since kami na ngayon ang leading sa season," said LUCNAS coach Louie Aquino.

Aquino said despite the win, it is still too early for the team to feel confident and they need to focus in each game until they reach their goal.

"Mahirap naman maging sobrang confident, siguro tuloy lang muna ang laro lalo pa at medyo challenging din yung next na makakalaro naming," Aquino added.

Trailing two points at the start of the payoff canto, 55-57, LUCNAS stepped up their game to regain the lead at 66-65, with 4:28 remaining in the game with Renbert Bayo commanding the floor.

The Dagupan based LNU Dukes tried to recover after missing a lot of shot attempts but LUCNAS stayed in front by five, 74-69, with 1:31 left in the pay-off canto.

LNU then narrowed the difference at 74-72 with 1:15 left as Julius Palaganas converted an and-one play after being fouled shooting a fastbreak lay-up.

The Dukes tried to generate momentum but failed to finish as Bayo and Rico Francisco dropped the last five points to bag the victory for LUCNAS.

Bayo led LUCNAS with 18 points including eight in the first quarter to lead LNU 19-15, while Francisco added 15 markers with 5 rebounds and two steals.

Palaganas posted a team high of 17 points for the Dukes with Roxal Melendez added 11, while Loyd Dollaga, Maynard Bona, and Rodcel Yanga added 10 points each.
