THE University of Baguio Cardinals finally found their groove during a fourth quarter surge in turning down GWE, 90-86, at the resumption of the 8th Panagbenga Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Trailing the ball game in the first three quarters, Darrien Occasion, Ranzae Cosme, and Mark Arellano combined for 22 points in the pay off canto to turn their fortune in the open bracket of the tournament at the Easter College Gym.

Coming in with a six-point deficit in the start of the pay-off canto, the Cardinals pulled of a searing 19-6 run in the first five minutes of the fourth period.

The service contractors then managed to regain the lead at 81-82, after Alex De Guzman converted a fastbreak basket coming from a steal with 3:42 remaining.

The gritty squads continued to outscore each other tying the game at 86 all with 1:01 left in the quarter.

GWE tried to generate momentum stepping-up their defense, but it was UB’s Occasion who dropped the last scores after running away with a steal from former UC Jaguar player and coach Heinz Acdong from the opposition.

“I am glad we will go home with the victory today, but I am very disappointed with how the team played tonight,” said Cardinal’s coach Joel Flores.

Flores said the team should see the competition as a training ground for themselves.

“Actually hindi naman namin habol na manalo sa tournament na ito eh, we are here to train and prepare ourselves in the bigger competitions we intend to compete in the near future,” Flores said.

“Hopefully the boys will learn much from here since some of the teams they play with are veterans already,” Flores added.

Ocassion scored a game high of 23 points for UB, while Cosme and Arellano added ten points each.

De Guzman scored a season high 30 points including six rebounds for GWE, while teammate Reagan Acdong capped out 23 points coming to play in his first game for the season.
