SLU, City Hall scores contrasting wins in Aliping Cup

SAINT Louis University Lady Navigators and Baguio City Hall Lady Spikers scored separate wins to open their title bid in the Congressman Aliping’s Volleyball Cup Tournament 2014 February 20 at the Engineer’s Hill covered court.

The Lady Navigators barely escaped Route 55 in a thrilling five set decider, 29-27, 14-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-12, in the event organized by the Philippine Volleyball Federation.

Baguio City Hall, meanwhile, needed only three sets in overpowering Sta. Escolastica Village, 25-7, 25-15, 25-19, in the second game.


In the men’s category, Easter College Inc. started high with the season’s title bid in disposing Department of Education, winning three straight sets, 25-19, 25-20, 25-18.

Tournament director Tommy San Pedro earlier said the organizers are overwhelmed with the number of participating teams in the first installment of the competition.

“Coming to establish such tournament is quite decent because of the vast number of participating team na sumali, actually we can express that sports such as volleyball really is a window for people to develop camaraderie with each other,” San Pedro said.

He added since it is still timely to speak of the top team picks he looks forward to a successful presentation of the tournament.
“Masyado pang maaga to predict who will claim the championship crown, as of now all teams are focused in improving their game and enjoying the activity,” San Pedro quipped.

The tournament is expected to run until the last week of March which is composed of eight different teams in two separate divisions for male and female.

Other squads included in the distaff side are Team Itogon, Dontogan Women’s Association, Philippine Health Insurance Corporation Inc., and Medina Belles squad.

The men’s team line-up includes BVS Colleges, Santa Escolastica Village men, SABM crew, Black Orchids, and NIIT-Baguio.
Organizers said trophies, medals, certificates, and cash prizes will be awarded for the winning teams with the mythical six to be cited at the same time.
