Dagsian fends off Narcita for crown

DAGSIAN United started stronger and finished rival Team Narcita with flare to win the championship crown in bracket A of the 1st Budz Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament 2013 at the Easter College gym Sunday evening.

After rushing to a nine point lead in the first four minutes of the ball game, Dagsian U never backed down since to close out Narciat, 105 – 97, in the winner take all championship game.

Flynn Dawan scored 19 points for Dagsian including six fastbreak points made in the last two minutes of the game leaving him speechless after bagging the Most Valuable Player plum.


“Nagtulungan lang kami as a team kaya nag-champion kami as a team, bonus na lang na ako ang binigyan ng MVP award,” said Dawan.

Aries Gazmin, Louie Dumo, and Carlo Munoz combined for 17 points in the first quarter as Dagsian U ended the opening canto with a seven point lead, 27-20.

Dagsian U then padded their lead at 14 before the half time as Dawan teamed up with Dumo and William Channas for a 52-38 bubble.

Riding high on their momentum before the break, Dagsian U then carved a game high lead of 17 points, 61-44, with 5:25remaining in the third canto.

Narcita, however, stormed back to life as Mark Lester Viray and Jerry Rigos combined for 18 huge points to stare an eight points deficit, 74 – 66, going into the final period.

The glass and aluminium suppliers continued their rally in the pay-off period with Rigos and Rene Lagit continue to bring damage and came close at 77-72 with 6:29 remaining in the ball game.

Dagsian however came up with 19 – 11 run in five minutes to restore a 13 point lead, 96-83, with 1:22 left.

“Talagang Ganado sa laro tonight ang lahat ng player, halos lahat ng binibitiwan nila pumapasok,” said a happy coach Noel Ferrer.

“Yung depensa actually ang key factor para lumamang starting sa second quarter, alam namin kung sino ang mga gagawa ng puntos sa kabilang team kaya naging gameplan na dikitan at i-shutdown sila,” Ferrer added.

Dawan added three assists, two rebounds, and a steal to his stats while Dumo scored a game high 24 points for Dagsian, while Channas and Gazmin checked-out with 20 and 14 respectively.

Rigos placed a double-double display for Narcita with 25 points, 15 boards, and three blocks, while Viray dropped 25 scores and five rebounds.

Francisco Jose converted 15 including three straight threes in the fourth quarter, while Lagit was limited to only 16 points for Narcita.

Meanwhile, San Vicente Barangay emerged as champions in bracket C after defeating Furukawa 93-79. San Anton championed in bracket B after disposing Diaz Construction, 81-72.
