Sangiao: 9 Wushu Sanda gold medallists made their way to the Palarong Pambansa 2014

THE kickoff of Wushu Sanda as a Demonstration Sport in the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association Meet 2014 was a success. It was participated by delegations from Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and Baguio City.

The overall champion for the 25-match Wushu event is Baguio City with a total of 5 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals. Kalinga was second with 2 golds, Benguet was third with 1 gold, which was won by their female contender in the 55-kg division, 6 silvers and 2 bronze medals.

Fourth is Ifugao with 1 gold, 2 silvers and 1 bronze and at 5th place is Apayao which took home 9 bronze medals.


The competition took place on February 8th at the Pilota Court, Woodsgate, Camp 7, Baguio City and the awarding took place at the Benguet Sports Center at Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet on February 9th.

The 9 gold medallists in the different divisions are Jomar Balangui, Wilford Bagangao, Jefraen Odalio, Jenie Cabinto and Ria Nicole Biswek from Baguio City, Andres Nape-ek and Love Valeny Alsiyang from Kalinga, Reinier Nanglegan from Ifugao and Aubrey Bugayong from Benguet.

They will be playing in the Palarong Pambansa 2014 which will be held in Sta. Cruz, Laguna on May 4-10, 2014 which will be attended by 17,000 young athletes ages 13-17, coaches and officials from 17 regions in the Philippines.

The officiating team for CARAA-Wushu Sanda 2014 Competition is headed by Tan Sui Tong Candelaria as the Jury/ Tournament Manager.
Meanwhile, the Panagbenga Festival is still ongoing and the different activities connected to it are much attended by local and foreign spectators.

One of the programs under the Community-led events of Panagbenga is our 15th Team Lakay Grappler’s Cup which will be on Sunday, February 16th at 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Igorot Garden.

Different gyms from Baguio City and its nearby provinces are participating in the said event such as Altitude Gym, Lakay Central Gym, Lakay La Trinidad Gym, Lakay San Fernando Gym, Lakay Mountain Province, Philippine Military Academy, YMCA- Baguio as well as visiting athletes from Switzerland.

We invite everyone who may be interested to join in the competition or even watch to come and support us.

The purpose of having this event is to provide a venue for our students and athletes to showcase what they have been learning in the gym and to provide the athletes more exposure and experience, which are part of the development of the ground games of our fighters and members as well as the other participants from different gyms all around the Cordilleras. Other purposes of this grappler’s cup are to promote sportsmanship and camaraderie among the competitors and to raise awareness on the effects of sports especially among the youth.
