AFTER placing dead last in the 2013 edition of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (Caraa), Ifugao is keen on improving its overall standing as it jump-started with two gold medals in athletics.

Judy Gumiyab’s leap of 4.47 meters in long jump elementary earned the province’s first medal, as action in the weeklong regional meet gets going at the Wangal Sports Center in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Baguio’s Thryxen Fabe Alfonso’s 4.36 was good for silver while Juliet Acdang of Mt. Province settled for third place with a jump of 4.23 meters.

Another gold mint was added by Ifugao Saturday morning in the shot put secondary girls after a record throw of 8.70 meters by Kayla Bugati.

Provincemate Julie Ulanggi heaved the iron ball at 8.34 to settle for silver.

Apayao’s Keith Leigh Gundan was good for bronze after throwing a distance of 8.34.

Ifugao sent a total of 428 athletes consisting of 174 elementary and 254 secondary students for the weeklong affair.

Abra also looks poised to maintain its overall fourth place finish last year, as Jonnel Orilla snatched the province’s first medal in the meet by topping the long jump for elementary boys.

Orilla had a leap of 4.93 meters to edge silver medalist Jericho Pinera of Kalinga who had 4.71-meter jump.

Kalinga's Charlemagne Luces took home the bronze medal with a 4.66 jump.

Caraa’s 2014 edition will see some sports debuting as demo sports while two traditional games were added recently.

Added as demo sports are billiards, futsal, wrestling, wushu, and arm wrestling will be played by secondary athletes, while kadang kadang or wooden stilts will be played by elementary only.

Wushu, after making its debut in the 2013 edition of the Palarong Pambansa, will be included as a regular sport while wrestling and futsal may be introduced in the 57th edition this year.

The Wrestling Association of the Philippines will promote the sport in schools nationwide after the Department of Education included wrestling in the 2014 Palarong Pambansa program.

President Benigno Aquino III last year signed Republic Act 10588, an act institutionalizing the conduct of the Palarong Pambansa, with wrestling as one of the medal sports.
