NELSON Turtoga dropped 23 big points to lead BEAT with an 84-73 win against St. Joseph in the on-going eliminations round of the 1st Budz Cup Basketball Invitational Tournament 2013.
Turtoga added six steals, five rebounds, and four more assists to exhaust St. Joseph during their match up in bracket A at the Easter College gym.
St. Joseph opened the ball game with a steady scoring coming from Bem Pimentel, Dave Stapely and Mark Molina to close the first quarter with 17-19 edge.
But it was short lived when Turtoga delivered a fastbreak basket to tie the score 23 all with 7:27 running in the second quarter.
St. Joseph tried to regain control but the faster BEAT squad capitalized on their momentum generating a 15-0 run, and lead at 40-25, behind Clifford Panayo, Malcolm Ebilane, and Joseph Orinion.
Stapely then stepped-up his game converting another four points under the basket to close the first half at 40-29, BEAT in front.
Stapely and Bhogs Gatbonton tried to carry St. Joseph with a combined 13 point outburst halfway in the third period to trim the gap at 52-43 but BEAT countered every points scored by the saints to close the quarter with a 62-52 edge.
The start of the pay-off canto saw Gatbonton, Molina, and Bhogs Dizo trimming the lead into three, 66-63, with 5:04 left in the period.
Nursing a foul trouble, Molina was sent to the bench with 4:15 left after fouling out in the ball game that buried St. Joseph’s hope of stealing the ball game.
“We cornered them with tight defense, talagang yun ang naging principal na game plan ng mga players after the first quarter,” said BEAT coach Bong Tadeo after the game.
Al Odra scored 19 points for BEAT including nine out of three-point shots, while Stapely dropped 20 points including ten rebounds for St. Joseph.
“Siguto kung hindi kami nagbigay ng adjustments nakagawa sila ng momentum para makalamang after that kaya overall we are happy with the results,” Tadeo closed.
