BAGUIO City continues to reap honors as they enhance their title bid bagging five golds and three silvers on the first day of the Batang Pinoy National Championships in Panaad Park in Bacolod City slated January 28-February 1.

Reymark Quezada landed the first out of five gold medals for the Summer Capital as he outlasted other competitors from all over the country finishing the 5000 meter run within 17:10:02 in the athletics event.

Quezada, who ranked overall third during the Luzon leg in Iba, Zambales, also snatched silver after coming second in the 1500 meter race to add in the city’s medal tally.

Leah Taltala lorded over other contenders in the girl’s high jump event after crossing the high bar and record a 1.48 meter best.

Jenkins Lorenzo Labao, who also towed a gold medal in the boy’s 400 meter freestyle event, teamed-up with Neil Nazarro, Dan Christian Leyba and Renz Gawidan to lead the boys 200 meter medley swimming relay.

Meanwhile, Allana Sagubo dominated in the girl’s 200 meter back stroke, with Leyba generating silver in the boy’s 200 meter event before the day closes. Brylle Gever Vinluan also added his own silver medal in the boy’s rapid chess event.

The Summer Capital has already logged 21 gold medals last October for the national standings, whereas wushu has 15, archery with five, and one from motocross.

Meanwhile the Visayas qualifying leg champion Cebu City, who is seen as the closest competitor for Baguio, has already bagged 15 gold medals where they dominated most in the dancesport competition.

The city athletes will still see to gather more awards in arnis competition as they are seen to be the most bemedalled team during the recent Arnis National Competitions held last December.

City sports coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said earlier he is confident with the performance the city athletes will showcase in during the national competitions.

“Confident ako sa magiging results ng competitions na even after ng national finals dito sa Bacolod,” Gonzales said.

Baguio will try to defend and record a rare three-peat in the Batang Pinoy Nationals after bagging the overall crown in 2011 and 2012.
Other sports to be participated in the nationals will be athletics, boxing, judo, lawn tennis, and wrestling.

Winners from the Batang Pinoy National Qualifiers will represent our country in the coming 2014 Youth Olympic Games this coming August in Nanjing, China, and for other international age group competitions.
