FOUR out of town collegiate teams, including Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic Association League season 27 champion University of Baguio are expected to heat up the competition as the 8th staging of Panagbenga Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament kicks-off February 16.

Three universities from Pangasinan and one from La Union has already signed up for the tournament which is expected to beef up the open bracket when the tournament formally opens next month as part of the monthlong celebration of the Baguio Flower Festival.

Some 50 teams are also seen to join the tournament which will be divided into six brackets.

Overall event coordinator Edwin Edades said the tournament will incorporate the purpose of promoting health and camaraderie among the enthusiasts of the sport.

“Just as usual, aside from creating a venue for playing basketball, the event is targeting to promote physical health, good friendship, and brotherhood amongst its participants,” Edades said.

“With it we can further develop yung skills ng mga mag-lalaro and makakatulong tayo by means of keeping people away from vices that does not only damage but will also generate problem in our community,” Edades added.

The basketball tournament officiated by the National Amateur Basketball Referees Association (NABRO) is expected to end by the second week of April.

A 40-and-above category is also seen to be added.

Winners for the season will be awarded trophies for the team plus cash prizes while organizers will also give special citations for the most valuable player at the close of the basketball tourney.

Organizers earlier projected the participants to grow higher in number as in the previous staging as part of the annual flower festival celebration in the Summer Capital.
