DAVE Stapely capped a 15 point outing including six crucial points in the final two minutes to give St. Joseph a 70-71 win against Sergeross in the on-going eliminations of the 1st Budz Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament.
After trailing in the entire ball game, St. Joseph turned the tide and overcame a seven point deficit in the final five minutes of play for their fourth win in five outings at the Easter College gym strengthening their title bid in bracket A.
From a 53-60 deficit in the 5:24 mark of the pay off canto, Stapley joined hands with Boshong Dizo and Mark Molina in carving six fast break points to trim the gap at 59-62 with 3:54 left.
Sergeross however rallied to extend the lead as Melvin Mariano and Ezekiel Gonzalo carve another six points for a 63-68 advantage with 2:50 remaining.
Sergeross tried to strengthen their defense but Molina ignited another run and tie the ball game at 68 all with 1:11remaining.
Mariano answered with a fastbreak in the ensuing play to put Sergeross back on the driver’s seat at 68 – 70 with 47 second left.
Stapley then came back with a huge three point play in the remaining second of the ball game to steal the victory and hand Sergeross their first loss in five games.
“Medyo hindi maganda ang situation sa bench ng team during the first three quarters kaya siguro we were trailing, pero I am so happy that we were able to work it out and win,” Stapely said.
“As one of the veterans sa team I knew I should step-up my game, and good thing na in the last two minutes all my shots were working,” Stapely added.
St. Joseph team captain Bem Pimentel said the tight defense saved them in the last minutes of the ballgame.
“We really tightened our defense and made sure na walang makakalusot na shots from our opponents anywhere sa court, okay naman since we gave them the pressure before matapos ang laro,” said Pimentel.
“Maganda lang talaga ang naging teamwork right sa stretch ng game, hopefully the winning momentum will be carried out sa mga susunod pa naming mga games,” Pimentel closed.
Dexter Siy led the scoring for St. Joseph with his 20 points and adding five rebounds, and a steal as teammate Stapely recorded a double-double with 15points and 11 rebounds, while Mariano charged Sergeross with 20 points and three steals.
