THERE’S no doubt at the back of every Baguio athlete’s mind is to bring home the over-all crown anew when the 2014 edition of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association opens next month to be hosted by Benguet province.

With just a few weeks more before the grand opening at the Wangal Sports Complex, Summer Capital bets are bent ire on dominating the regional meet which they have been doing for the past 27 years.

DepEd-Baguio supervisor for MAPEH and sports coordinator Fernando Eleponga said he is optimistic on the performance of the city athletes for the upcoming sports event.

“Malaki naman lagi ang tiwala natin sa lahat ng mga competing delegations to keep the overall title in our hands,” said Eleponga.

Some 650 delegates including 432 elementary and high school athletes will comprise the delegation that will compete in 19 sports event.

“Positive pa rin ang chances na manguna tayo doon, every year talagang pinaghahandaan ng mga contingent natin lahat ng mga competitors from the other provinces,” Eleponga said.

Events to be played in the annual sporting event includes the medal archery, athletics, baseball, chess, football, sipa/sepak takraw, softball, swimming, lawn tennis, volleyball, basketball, boxing, gymnastics, table tennis, arnis, taekwondo, and badminton.

“Lahat ng mga coaches that supervise the young athletes ay mahuhusay magturo, saka collaborative ang nagiging recognition niyan kaya without doubt alam natin na lahat ready sa kanilang respective events,” Eleponga added.

Last year, the city led by amassing 872 points, while Benguet came close with 434.60 points, as last year’s host Apayao secured the third spot scoring 419. The annual sports spectacle is seen to house more than a thousand elementary and secondary students from the Abra, Kalinga, Ifugao, and Mt. Province.
