AN ACTION-packed weekend kicks off the second phase of the Baguio-Benguet educational Athletic League season 27 with three sporting events in different venues.

Rivalries get renewed in the 10 member schools of the largest collegiate league north of Manila with University of Baguio eyeing another stellar performance after taking home eight championships in the first semester including the centerpiece tournament men’s basketball and the crowd favorite women’s volleyball.

BBEAL commissioner and University of the Cordilleras asst. vice president for Communications Alec Mapalo earlier said the league is trying to re-invent itself in a bid to boost interest of students in the league.

“We want to elevate BBEAL as a league that is at par with UAAP and NCAA. But it will not be overnight, it takes small steps,” Mapalo said.

Benguet State University returns and guns for their second crown in softball at the BSU ground which will be played starting today, January 18 to 19 but it will be a tough contest as former seven time champion University of the Cordilleras returns with an intact line-up.

The UC Lady Jaguars is reported to parade the same line-up which won the gold medal in the National Prisaa tournament last year.

Lawn tennis will also be played simultaneously at the Baguio Tennis Club while Arnis, where UB defends both men and women’s crown, will be played at the Cordillera Career Development College in La Trinidad.

Saint Louis University, who reigns supreme in the diamond, will defend their baseball crown against a tough BSU crowd when play begins on the 25th and 26th together with judo and tea kwon do.

Football will kick-off this coming February 1, 2, and 8th at the BSU open field where Philippine Military Academy, Saint Louis University, University of Baguio, and BSU Musangs will battle for the crown.

Athletics will be played at the Baguio Teachers Camp on February15-16.

Special events included are the body building competition on January 18, the fun run which is seen to lure over 2000 participants on February 8, and the prestigious search for Mr. & Ms. BBEAL slated February 14.

Other participating schools are the Baguio College of Technology, Pines City Colleges, Baguio Central University, and the University of the Philippines-Baguio.
