ST. JOSEPH walloped Dagsian United, 78-58, to secure their second straight victory in bracket A of the on-going eliminations of the 1st Budz Cup Basketball Invitational Tournament 2013.

Bem Pimentel fired 23 big points, adding four rebounds, three assists, with two steals to keep St. Joseph on track of their title bid at the Easter College gym Sunday afternoon.

“The team did well despite coming from a long holiday break,” said St. Joseph playing coach Dave Stapely after the game.

Stapely added the good effort from each of their team members was enough to secure the victory.

“I guess maganda ang naging defense ng team, yun ang key factor kaya kami nanalo for today’s ballgame,” Stapely added.

St. Joseph ballers took charge early in the second quarter after securing a double digit advantage from Dagsian 37-26, with Mark Molina and second stringer Bogs Gatbonton stepping up their offense converting eight straight points via fastbreak.

Dagsian U tried to keep up as William Chanas and Shaun Dao-wan carved seven points to close the gap at 38-33 with 3:13 remaining but St. Joseph closed the first half with five unanswered points to register another double digit leadt at 43-33.

St. Joseph then took advantage in the third canto as Stapely, Ahriz Lomatao, and Earl Ang combined for 12 points to secure their biggest lead of the ballgame, 55-40 with 2:19 left in the quarter.

Dagsian U however managed to keep the ball game within striking distance as Chanas and Johnson Carlos carved an eight point run to trim the lead at 55-48 with 1:04 remaining in the period.

Dagsian, sensing urgency after trailing by nine at the turn of the pay off canto staged a rally but their effort went to naught as St Joseph poured 14 big points down the stretch for another victory.

“We took them with tight defense, kaya sila nahirapan sa pag-convert ng points,” said Pimentel after the game.

“Sa first quarter kasi medyo nahirapan pa kami since running game ang laro nila, but it went our way naman since nakapag-adjust kami with our game at the start of the second quarter,” Pimentel added.
