CHAMPIONS in different races, Carlos Anton and Mike Potenciano drove to excellence during the weekend and take the top honors at the close of Race of Champions held in San Pablo Laguna.
Using a Chevy Cruze car, both accomplished race car drivers posted their fastest times thru the highly technical autocross track set up in town center of San Pablo.
Local hero and international racer Mike Potenciano topped the time sheets with a time of 1 min 5.92 seconds over 6-time Philippine Hillclimb Champion Carlos Anton (1:7.15), Group 4 Hillclimb Champion Alfie Concepcion (1:10.24) and Formula BMW driver Gaby de la Merced (1:10.86).
Anton, however, got his revenge over Potenciano in the Open Division when he posted the best time of the day using his trusty Mark Young prepared CRX clocking 36.81 seconds over Potenciano’s 37.00 second run using the same car.
“Mike is my mentor and I truly still am a student up against him, he drove a fantastic race and it’s great to battle with him again.” Anton said after the race.
Current Philippine Autocross Champion Danby Yapchitchay came in third posting a time of 37.78 seconds using his Subaru STI.
Anton and Potenciano will be team mates come April when the first ever Philippine NASCAR Team competes in the US at the famous Charlotte Motor Speedway using full scale 865 Horsepower Sprint Cup cars.
They will be up against 12 other countries at the NASCAR World Circuit race. The Philippine team is sponsored by the Manozca Foundation, Ford Global City, Spirit Sports, Cebuana Lhullier, Fox Sports, Coral World Park, Philippine Airlines, ABS-CBN, STP, Goodyear, Prestone, and Marcelo Racing.
