AS THE celebration of Philippine Environment Month ends this June comes the call for a strong commitment for the continuous campaign for Save the Asin River (STAR).

Local veteran mediaman March Fianza, one of the advocates of STAR said in his Facebook post that the residents’ commitment is needed for the protection of Asin River.

Earlier STAR prime advocate Tadiangan Nangalisan Hydro Ancestral Land Association (TNHALA) President Roger Sinot appealed to pro environment groups and supporters including the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club (BCBC) to join in the campaign. BCBC and Sinot are yet to meet to discuss the project.

But how polluted is Asin River right now is yet to be determined. An expert say a research on the water quality management area (WQMA) is needed. This include the tributaries of Asin River -Bucan River, City Camp Lagoon that run to Crystal Cave going along Asin Road, Irisan River flowing at the Irisan Bridge, and water coming from Tuba Poblacion area, Lumecneng, and Lasilas.

Whatever result of the study will be the basis for the river protection program to be implemented by a proposed body that will be in charge of the projects and plans for the campaign.

Intensifying the STAR campaign is seen an effective way of protecting the river form further pollution and prevent the same fate that happened in Balili River in La Trinidad, Benguet. Saving the river is also saving the Ibaloy culture for the residents as Sinot said.

The need to inform the residents on the important role they have to play for the protection of the river and the essentials of the river protection goals including how they can actively participate in the campaign for environmental protection is urged. This can be done by a conducting a continuous forum on water protection where all concerned sectors can actively participate.
