Baguio Stories

ON MAY 3, Saturday, my niece Stella turned 18 with a debut. As someone who was asked to deliver opening remarks, I told all in attendance the reason why I was this person doing that.

To Stella Marie Capule, I am Auntie Linda. To her parents Erwin and Karen I am Ate Linda because Karen’s mother is my Auntie Marie. Auntie Marie Hernandez is my mother Ruby’s first cousin because their mothers are Lopez sisters. Auntie’s Maries mother’s name is Pacita Zambrano Lopez Constantino and my mother’s mother’s name is Corazon Zambrano Lopez Tan. These two sisters were children of Paterno Lopez and Adela Zambrano, both of Balaoan, La Union. This Paterno Lopez was in his heyday a Commissioner of The Philippine Civil Service, and had to relocate his family to Manila when he was so appointed to serve his country.

The name Adela is the reason why my favorite grand aunt, Adelaida Zambrano Lopez Limson, is named Adelaida Maria. She was my own Lola Cory’s younger sister whom I remember well and most fondly. My mother called her Auntie Dely, and she was thus Lola Dely to me.

Lola Dely, smiling at us from an old photograph, was brown haired, fair of skin, and looks totally ornamental. She was the Miss FEU of her day.

However, she was also already a lawyer in the 1930s in Manila, a time and place where most lawyers were men. Lola Dely got along really well with my lawyer father, whom she spoke Iloko to, and called Andring.

When I was a child, Lola Dely and her husband Lolo Mariano, their children, friends, and other relatives were in Baguio most summers, visiting my mother who had run off to Baguio with her Igorot. Those summers that they were around, they played mahjjong, did the usual touristic thangs, and just generally had a great time.
