THE holiday season - with the Philippines known to have the longest Christmas celebration - with its many parties where mouthwatering food is served in abundance is a challenging period, to say the least, in our lives year in, year out.

Indeed, dear friends, human as we are, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, so to speak and the author would bet his bottom centavo, that even those very disciplined persons, whose virtues of selflessness approximate sainthood , would soon realize that temptation to indulge in food and drinks, eventually win them over.

Try mentioning the word "dieting" during these times, and you will get a chorus of what Ryzza Mae and Bimby said in My Little Bossing, "What are you, crazy?"


Kidding aside, whether your resolution to lose weight is borne by health reasons due to the fearful admonition of your cardiologist- which in reality, he or she may have to practice what they preach- or just want to trim and tone those muscles to show off and flaunt in a fitness or beauty contest, here are some practical suggestions.

Eat small portions of everything you like, to satisfy the curiosity.

Drink a glass of water before eating, to give you some sense of fullness. A few overweight and obese folks have removed the television from the dining room, to cut down eating time while watching their favorite telenovela. Some have even gone to the extreme of putting a mirror in the dining room, so that occasional glance at a bulging tummy or a double-chin might just bring the guilt of gluttony.

For those with medical conditions, it is strongly emphasized that you seek medical consultation on what kind of exercise you may do and what you should never do. The spur of the moment to decide you want to lose weight may have some serious results. Things you may do at home include, hiding the remote control. Rising to change the channel gives you that much stretch and make your blood flow more vigorous. You don’t have to go to the gym.

An inexpensive pedometer, attached to your waist would give a smile on your face, if you had paced 10,000 steps that day. A leisurely walk or light gardening would all have a cumulative effect in burning those unwanted calories.

So, all it takes is a lil common sense, with a dash of motivation and discipline. To our dear readers and friends, thank you for being with us in 2013 and here's wishing you a happy, healthy, safe, prosperous and blessed 2014.
