-A A +A

LOVE - It is the common theme in most stories and poems, the common ingredient that binds a family, the common cord that ties friendship and the common law that unites countries. Indeed, love is the most common word that each mouth can speak.

This month of February, love will be such music in the air since this month is tagged as the “Month of Love” especially this 14th, which is the Valentine’s Day. There would be more teddy bears to be sold in the mall, more red heart-shaped pillows to be displayed in the glass window of stalls, more chocolates and cakes to be ordered from the bakery. Most especially, there would be more red flowers to be seen and sent around. It becomes more memorable when it is celebrated in a very special place, like in Baguio.

Celebrating this momentous month is more meaningful here in Baguio. Aside from its fair weather, its cool breeze and beautiful sites, it is being added by the yearly celebration of Panagbenga. The term “Panagbenga” is a Kankanaey, which means “for a season of blooming.” This is also known as the Baguio Flower Festival. For the whole month, the different flowers are the main stars. Everyone can witness both big and small sizes of flowers and also their colorful combinations that can catch anyone’s attention. Their tempting fragrance could let anyone smile.

Behind the God-given beauty of the flowers is the love of art. Each activity in Panagbenga proves how the people of Baguio exhibit their creativity in making the beautiful more beautiful. It awakens the imagination of each participant of the festival’s landscaping competition to be more innovative and resourceful in beautifying the land through the different flowers and plants combining them with different materials too. The dancers for the incoming street dancing parade would surely enliven our appreciation and love to the art of music and dance. Lastly, the incoming grand float parade will absolutely display unique designs of each float that would surely bring into existence the beauty of fantasy into reality through the use of different flowers. These activities make Panagbenga a distinct festival among other festivals in the Philippines and also, a special place to celebrate the Month of Love too.

Truly that it is more fun in Baguio as we appreciate beauty while we celebrate this special month with our loved ones. (Sheryl Langwas)
