THE Office of the City Social Welfare and Development Office is calling barangays of Baguio to join the Search for Child Friendly Barangay before the deadline of entries on September 15.

The Search for Child Friendly Barangay is an annual search, which institutionalizes a child friendly environment and governance at the barangay level that promotes and protects children's rights.

Social worker Cynthia Langagan told Sun*Star Baguio the search is the highlight of the celebration of the Children's Month during October.

Aside from the recognition and cash prize awarded to the most child friendly barangays, the search aims to encourage barangays in Baguio to address issues and concerns on children, 18 years old below.

The search also helps the city government and OCSWDO to monitor and evaluate project implementation of barangays promoting children protection, participation and development.

Specifically, the OCSWDO evaluates the barangays' planning of projects and formulation of policies including funds allocated and spent for programs and activities for children.

Other factors considered in the search which the office also encourages for barangays are efforts of villages towards achieving a clean and healthy environment and projects and campaigns to ensure proper nutrition of children.

The education status of children and efforts of the barangay to ensure children are protected against crimes and to prevent them from being involved in activities against the law are also judged in the search.

Aside from the protection of children's welfare, the OCSWDO also makes sure children are engaged in communal activities and decision-making in the formulation of policies and planning of projects and activities.

Langagan said the search has been helpful in their promotion of advocacies that contributed to achieving a child friendly Baguio.

Through this, barangays' mandate to implement programs and policies to empower children are strengthened and even more intensified.

"Malaki ang iniinvest ng mga barangays sa bata and that is very important," the social worker added.

For submission of entries, barangays may apply at the City Social Welfare Office located at Upper Session Road.

Interested barangays should submit their application forms duly signed by their respective village chief; Barangay Development Plan for 2013, Plan of Action for Children for 2013, copy of Barangay Resolutions for children enforced; BCPC Organizational and Functional Chart; and accomplishment reports of children programs and activities for children in 2013.

Winners in the search will receive P40,000 for the 1st prize; P30,000 for the 2nd prize; P20,000 for the 3rd prize; and P5,000 consolation prices for the following top seven barangays.
