LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- President Benigno Aquino III has been asked to help manage flood control systems in the Valley.

In a resolution penned by Councilor John Botiwey, the local council is requesting Aquino for P30 million intended for flood control system in critical portions of the Balili River.

The request was coursed through Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa.

The Balili River traverses the valley area of the municipality surrounded on both sides by numerous residential house and lots, farm lots, educational institutions, business establishments and other building structures.

"The river is where huge volume of flood waters from Baguio City drains through which when combined with the floodwaters coming from other tributaries from Barangay Ambiong, Lubas, Tawang, Balili, Pico, and Betag specially during the typhoon seasons causes swelling and very strong current which poses dangers of scouring and destruction of existing river banks, flood controls, crops and other properties," Botiwey said.

Other very important structures that need to be protected are the spring and the filtration building of La Trinidad Water District that provides potable water to a big slice of populace of the municipality.

Botiwey added "prevention is the best alternative to this problem and flood control is the best alternative in this case which will protect the river banks from being scoured thereby preventing the destruction of crops, buildings and other properties including loss lives."

The resolution was approved during last week's regular meeting. (With Maria Lourdes G. Martin/ ISU-Echague Intern)
