DENGUE cases have decreased in the Summer Capital.

Dr. Mary Ann Tubera of the City Health Services Office reported in a recent forum the number of dengue cases declined January to June from the same period last year.

Based on the report, the city had a 73.99 percent decrease in dengue cases or 97 cases from 373 during the first semester last year.

Some 42 percent of the patients are between 22 and 29 years old.

Tubera added that most of the recorded patients were males, assuming men are more mobile than women, the reason the vectors attack them.

Top 10 barangays with the most recorded cases are Irisan with seven; North Sanitary Camp, Pinsao Proper and Gibraltar all with five each; Pacdal with four; and Quezon Hill Proper, New Lucban, Loakan Proper, Holy Ghost Extension and Bakakeng Central, all with three cases each.

The city had a fatality rate of 0.16 percent, mainly due to the recorded zero deaths caused by dengue.

Dr. Rowena Galpo, also from HSO, attributed the decrease in cases to the awareness of people on how to prevent and fight dengue.

"Mas nagiging aware na sila sa prevention," she said, implying that the information dissemination campaign of the HSO and the Department of Health (DOH) has been effective.

Baguio City has an integrated vector management where the DOH, local government units, water authority, and environment authority, are tasked to eye and take actions on the different factors that may cause dengue.

The city HSO continues its vector surveillance and implements interventions such as chemical control with the use of adultocide, larvicide and insect growth regulators.

Aside from these preventive measures, the health office also called the public to keep their guards up to protect themselves from vector born illnesses.
