TIMELY and accurate information can save lives.
In line with the National Disaster Consciousness Month, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council introduces a mobile application called "Batingaw" designed to make people proactive in times of disasters through information.
Batingaw is an application which transforms android and iOs smartphones and tablets into an electronic safety disaster tool equipped with features that can convert the gadget into a flashlight, compass, a siren and even a radio.
"The timing of this initiative of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council is ideal considering most of the public has their cellphones," Office of the Civil Defense-CAR regional director Alex Uy said.
"Now, safety tool is just a reach within their pockets," Uy added.
The online application contains the latest news updates from 18 agencies that are linked in the application.
The Agencies are NDRRMC, Pagasa, Phivolcs, PNP, DSWD, DOH, PIA and Philippine Red Cross, among others.
An e-library section where e-books, files and videos on disaster risk reduction and management is also viewable as well as safety tips for different types of hazards.
In addition, national, regional, provincial, city and municipal hotlines and contact details of different government offices particularly NDRRMOs are provided in case of any emergency needs.
Furthermore, Batingaw is an interactive app where the public cannot only view but also share comments on the latest feeds of the different linked agencies as well as post photos and reports of incidents in their communities.
Uy stressed this kind of applications is recommended for all smartphone users so they may be aware of the possible disasters and be educated of the actions they can incorporate which may be necessary for future emergencies.
"Kung gusto niyong iconvert yung inyong cellphones into a safety gadget, idownload niyo lang po yung Batingaw application," he ended.
Batingaw is available for free in Google Play for android smartphones and in Apple Store for iOs devices.
