LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Illegal logs in Bakun and Buguias were seized by Cordillera cops in operations this week.

Police Regional Office-Cordillera regional director Chief Superintendent Isagani Nerez warned illegal loggers of intensified efforts of police against illegal activities in a bid to preserve the environment.

"It is our mandate to arrest and file charges against those violators of the law and ensure they be made to answer for their actions in coordination with the other law enforcement agencies," Nerez said.

Police reports reveal a haul of over P8,650 worth of illegal lumber recovered in both towns.

Bakun Municipal Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force (MAILTF) led by Police Senior Inspector Cesar Mallong and members of the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) discovered seven pieces of 3x3x14 with a total volume of 73 board feet pine lumber worth P2,500 pesos and a chainsaw in Sitio Dalayap, Gambang, Bakun on Monday.

In a separate operation, the Benguet Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC) also recovered 41 pieces of 2x3x10 sawn pine lumber with a volume of 205 board feet worth P6, 150.00 was found abandoned in Sitio Tin-apan, Bangao, Buguias Tuesday afternoon.

Unfortunately, there was no arrest made, as suspects were not in the area during the operations.

The intensified anti-illegal logging operations of police are part of a campaign to save the forest covers of the province from loggers who proliferate in the province.

Illegal logging remains to be a top concern for the province, which has reported activities in its protected forest covers as well as watersheds.

Police are now batting for deeper coordination between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to thwart the activity as well as collar those involved in the cutting of trees.
