LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Provincial Police chief Rodolfo Azurin said shabu has been making its way to the province.

Azurin said problem areas where the illegal drug is being monitored remain to be in province capital and Buguias, both known to be part of the vegetable staging point.

Azurin confirmed users are vegetable truck drivers and porters who feel the need to stay awake while at work delivering fresh produce.

The Benguet police chief said the drug problem in the province is still confined to small users and has not yet been infiltrated by organized drug groups.

Peddlers of the drugs are usually from other provinces who travel to the province selling to people from the vegetable industry.

Azurin reported the total drug haul for the province has been pegged at over P335,288,088.25 for 2013 alone, there were 40 drug operations conducted, 30 marijuana eradications, 5 checkpoint operations and buy bust operations, 9 arrests were also made in the previous year.

Azuirn said the curbing of illegal drugs is one of the priorities in the province. For the first quarter of the year there have been 34 operations made, 23 marijuana eradications, 3 checkpoint operations, 8 buy-bust operations and three arrests made so far.

The police are working closely with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in the fight against illegal drugs.

The PDEA reported previously three areas in the Valley identified to have rampant drug use and trafficking - Pico, Betag and Poblacion barangays.

PDEA also confirmed the growing number of vegetable trading truck drivers falling into drug use if only to stay awake and have multiple trips for trading produce.
