CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Mayor Edwin Santiago on Saturday said the City Government is promoting the use of bicycles as a means of transportation in a bid to combat climate change and keep the air clean.
Santiago emphasized the importance of biking to environmental protection and health during a cycling caravan and fun run on Saturday, the mayor's birthday. Some 300 bike enthusiasts and runners from the city and nearby areas snaked their way from Walter Martin Barangay San Agustin to major thoroughfares of the city at 6 a.m.
"Naniniwala tayo na ang pagbibisikleta ang pinaka-episyenteng paraan ng transportasyon at kung mahihikayat natin ang ating mga kababayan, mababawasan ang mabigat na daloy ng trapiko at maisasalba ang kalikasan," said Santiago.
He said that to realize this dream of making San Fernando as the "most bicycle friendly community", the City Government requested assistance from concerned national agencies like the Department of Public Works and Highways in putting up bicycle lanes along the city's major roads like MacArthur Highway.
Santiago underscored that the city is gearing up to become the most livable place where development is achieved without sacrificing the environment.
"Such initiatives are not exactly unheard of. In fact, non-motorized travel has been integrated in the road systems of foreign countries," he said.
Santiago also urged the public to explore more options and choose the best alternatives of transportation, saying that "this program will not only alleviate environmental concerns, but it will also promote a healthier regimen for Fernandinos."
