WORLD Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on June 5 to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth. It is a day for us to do something positive for the environment in our own communities.

In Baguio City, the recently released World Health Organization's 2014 Ambient Air Pollution study reported the "Summer Capital" has exceedingly high recorded levels of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), standard measures of air pollution.

This report has caused alarm on the quality of air we breathe, and many have questioned the truthfulness of the report and the methodologies used in gathering data. However, it is best to take this report as a wake-up signal, for the city government and citizens alike.

In response to this, and in observance of World Environment Day, Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary is inviting the public to a Community Dialogue: Seeking Solutions to Air Pollution in Baguio, on June 5, Thursday, 1 - 4:30 p.m. at Maryknoll Ecolocial Sanctuary at Campo Sioco, Baguio City.

A government panel will discuss government programs and insights on improving air quality in Baguio. A second panel will discuss "Seeking Solutions: Insights from Baguio Citizens". Solutions to be discussed range from lifestyle changes to the pedestrianization of Session Road. An open forum will follow to discuss ways forward in addressing the problem of air quality in Baguio.
