LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Assistance to deserving students is a top priority here.

Provincial Board members are putting into place provision of scholarships for deserving students through the Students Financial Assistance Program for Technical and Vocational Education and Skills Training Program.

The program aims to provide assistance to poor but deserving students especially the out-of-school youth and high school graduates who choose to enroll technical and vocational education of skills training in the province.

Amendments to the program aim to include all other technical and vocational, education or skills training, programs as well as to accommodate all interested and qualified residents especially the out-of-school youths.

Authored by Board Member Johnny Waguis and backed by the entire Provincial Board the law aims to cover Technical and Vocational Education or Skills Training (or TVEST) programs in the province registered with or accredited by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

Another proposed amendment to the program is the residency of applicants with a minimum of 10 years as certified by the barangay chairman.

High school graduates and graduates of Alternative Learning programs from any secondary school in the province will also be accommodated when the law is passed.

There will be a minimum of two grantees per municipality and each will be entitled to P6,000 per semester.

Enrollment at the Benguet Technical School will be preferred when the course or program intended to be enrolled by the grantee is offered.

The funding for the program to implement this ordinance will be appropriated under the General Fund for the Fiscal Year.
