THE Baguio City Council requested the Department of Education Cordillera (DepEd-CAR) to remind the public and even private schools on the 2007 DepEd order prohibiting the sale of carbonated drinks and junk food in school canteens.

In Resolution No. 57-2014 authored by Councilor Roberto Ortega, the council said that despite DepEd Order No. 8 series of 2007, the sale of softdrinks and other prohibited beverages remained rampant in schools in the city thus rendering the order “futile.”

“It is right and imperative to reiterate this DepEd Order since the health of the pupils and students are at high risk,” the resolution stated.

Section 4.4-5 of DepEd Order No. 8 series of 2007 or the Revised Implementing Guidelines on the Operation and Management of School Canteens in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools states that "only nutrient-rich foods such as root crops, noodles, rice and corn products in native preparation, fruits and vegetables in season, and fortified food products labeled rich in protein, energy, vitamins, and minerals shall be sold in the school canteen."

Beverages shall include milk, shakes and juices prepared from fruits and vegetables in season.

“The sale of carbonated drinks, sugar-based synthetic or artificially flavored juices, junk foods, and any food product that may be detrimental to the child’s health and do not bear the Sangkap Pinoy seal and/or did not pass BFAD approval is prohibited..,” the order said.

The Council Committee on Health and Sanitation, Ecology and Environmental Protection endorsed Ortega’s measure to include private schools. (Aileen Refuerzo)
