THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) recently advised Baguio residents to be wary of poisonous shellfish coming from Pangasinan sold at the public market.

BFAR's Marine Biotoxin Laboratory in Lucap, Alaminos, Pangasinan reported laboratory analysis of samples from Bolinao, Pangasinan sold at the Baguio City public market is positive for paralytic shellfish poison, more commonly known as red tide.

Samples given by BFAR-Cordillera to BFAR Ilocos Region, believed to be sold at the local market, have a toxicity level of 62 µgSTX or 100g of shellfish meat which is toxic and poisonous.

Aside from Bolinao, BFAR reported based on laboratory results, shellfishes collected along Bataan’s coastal waters in Mariveles, Limay, Orion Pillar, Balanga, Orani, Abucay and Samal; and coastal waters of Bolinao and Anda in Pangasinan are still positive for paralytic and shellfish poison beyond the regulatory limit.

Most of shellfish sold at the Baguio public market comes from coastal areas in Pangasinan and La Union.

On the basis of the results of BFAR’s study, authorities advised all types of shellfish, including alamang gathered from the areas mentioned, are unsafe for human consumption.

Fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe provided they are fresh and washed thoroughly while internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking, the BFAR advisory added.

The areas which are free from toxic red tides include coastal waters of Cavite, Las Piñas, Parañaque, Navotas and Bulacan in Manila Bay; coastal waters Alaminos and Wawa, Bani in Pangasinan.
