THE president of the biggest transport group here and adjoining provinces on Tuesday vowed to give hundreds of commuters safe and comfortable transportation as they move to places in view of three special events unfolding this month in this mountain resort 250 kilometers north of Manila.

In previous years, at least 800,000 to one million local and foreign visitors visit this city every February due to Valentine's Day, flower festival and alumni home coming of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

Junie Itliong, president of the Federation of Jeepney and Taxi Operators and Drivers Association of Baguio, Benguet and La Union (FEJODABBLU) which has more than 6,000 taxi and 22,000 jeepney units said their members and officers are now poised for their tourism-oriented service in the celebration of the three events.

He said that except for a small increase of taxi and jeepney fares here early last year, no other fare increase was implemented because "we also want to help our city sustain its tourism industry, without which all other industries would not prosper."

"We police our ranks. We require all our drivers to be courteous, clean, honest, helpful and defensive in driving. Our federation always remind our members that they have to exercise extraordinary diligence in driving public conveyances," said Itliong. (Aure Galacgac)
