TOURISM officials are encouraging tour organizers to come up with local walking tours to heritage sites and local destinations to further boost tourism in Baguio City.

Department of Tourism Regional Director Purificacion Molintas said walking tours are ways to involve tourists who want to experience an insightful visit in the city than just going to tourist destinations without any guides.

Molintas stressed heritage walking tours have become successful in areas such as Intramuros and Binondo in Manila.

The walking tours which are usually conducted early in the morning or late in the afternoon also contains components to promote health and wellness as visitors will have to set aside using public transportation therefore reducing exposure to pollution.

She said tours could focus on heritage, food, culture and arts as focus with accredited tour guides by the Department of Tourism giving information as well as provide trivia and history of places visited by tourists.

Among the earlier walking tours in the Summer Capital was initially started by journalist Ramon Dacawi which could serve as benchmark for tour operators in the city, she said.

She said walking tours could start in famous tourist destinations such as Loakan Road, Camp John Hay, South Drive, Mines View, Mansion, Wright Park, Teacher’s Camp, Botanical Garden, Casa Vallejo, Session Road, Baden Powell and Burnham Park.

Walking tours she stressed could also ease up traffic congestion experienced during the peak months which usually start during the cold months of December up to the summer months of April and May.

However, she stressed walking tours could only be successful if streets in Baguio remain pedestrian friendly.
