LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Drunken nights can go terribly wrong in Abra.

Junie Viste Balmaceda, while drinking with friends, got into a misunderstanding and decided to go on a shooting spree, Wednesday night.

Balmaceda, an employee of the Department of Public Works and Highways-Abra, wounded Lester Lacaden Bayongan and Rommel Cabanting Stock inside a bar in Bangued.

Abra Police chief Benjamin Lusad said witnesses identified Balmaceda positively and was arrested the following day.

Balmaceda said both victims were drinking in separate tables when a misunderstanding ensued resulting in a heated altercation between the two parties.

Lusad said Balmaceda left the place and later returned with his gun immediately shooting Bayongan and Stock several times.

Bayongan sustained a gunshot wound on his buttocks while Stock sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the different parts of his body.

Both victims of the shooting incident were immediately brought to the Abra Provincial Hospital for medical treatment.

Lusad said police were able to recover a caliber 45 gun which Balmaceda used in the shooting. “The gun will go through a ballistics test here,” Lusad explained.

In 2007, Abra town counted 43 murders, 16 frustrated murders, one attempted murder, 25 frustrated homicide, four attempted homicide and 12 homicide cases totaling to 101.

In the past, assassinations of political personalities Mark Ysrael Blando Bernos, Mayor of La Paz who was killed on January 13, 2006 and James Bersamin, Board member of Bangued killed on November 11, 2006 and the death of Rep. Luis Bersamin Jr. on December 13, 2006 triggered an apprise condemning political killings.
