LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Provincial board members reported their efforts to help the situation of farmers ousted from the public market parking area proved futile.
Board Member Florence Tingbaoen, chair for the committee on agriculture said talks about the ousted farmers’ plight with La Trinidad Mayor Edna last week remained negative.
Tingbaoen said the mayor remained firm on her stand to empty the space of farmer’s activities to give way for the town's development extended until the completion of the agri pinoy center at kilometer 6.
Board members tried to intervene in a bid to lobby for the farmers groups.
Farmers groups went to the provincial board weeks ago seeking help for their plight to have their stay at the market area.
"We respect the decision, kasi they are preparing for the Strawberry Festival kaya hindi pwede ang extension," Tingbaoen said.
She added there is no agreement between the farmers groups and the local government of La Trinidad on the use of the area.
“Development plan yung pagtayo ng building doon kaya kukunin na nila iyong place,” the lady councilor explained.
Board Member Robert Namoro added, "Despite the meeting we respect the decision of the Chief Executive."
Namoro said it is important for the farmers groups to know the provincial board tried their best to help them.
"At least naman naipakita namin ang support sa mga farmers dahil sa pagpunta namin doon," he stressed.
