Veggie price war on in the Valley

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – A price war is ongoing in the vegetable bowl of the country.

Buyers are on a head to head price war with disposers and farmers over an almost P5 per kilo disparity in two trading areas - the Kilometer 5 Vegetable Trading post and the Farmers Center at Puguis.

Friday afternoon, farmers were forced out of the market trading post along Kilometer 5, leaving them no choice but to converge at the Puguis Farmers Center to do business Saturday morning.

Buyers haggled with farmers and as a result lowered prices almost P5 lower than in the main vegetable trading post at kilometer 5.

At the Puguis Farmers center, produce was sold at P8 a kilo but farmers at the main Trading post were selling their goods at P12 a kilo, resulting to a price disparity, exasperating buyers and ultimately, making trading difficult.

If the price disparity continues, as well as the twin trading centers operation, an eventual shutdown of one trading center is seen.

Buyers, truckers and disposers cannot have two trading or “bagsakans” to operate in. If the scenario over the weekend continues, prices of farmers will be forced to plunge resulting to hike consumer prices.

It takes more money to haul vegetables out of the Puguis farmers center forcing buyers to get farmers to lower prices. With the area smaller, big trucks cannot come in forcing buyer to hire jeepneys to take short trips to get produce out of the area, all these costs will be passed on to the consumers.

Local businessmen have joined the fray in opposing the ouster of farmers in the market parking area.

The petition signed by 200 business personalities laments a slowdown in income if the oust of farmers from the market area is enforced.
