THREE policemen were killed, while another three were injured when an alleged group of the New People’s Army (NPA) held an ambush along a foot trail in Sitio Nangkatengay, Barangay Namal, Asipulo, Ifugao in April 5.

Regional Police officer Davy Limmong identified the three cops as team leader Inspector George Lauro; Police Officer 3 (PO3) Jody Mamgue; and P02 John Codod.

The injured policemen are PO2 Marcial Angaga, PO2 Solomon Pao-iton, and PO1 Abdon Angayon.

Limmong said the policemen were then going home from a regular foot patrol within the towns when the rebel group under the leadership of Casimiro Binayon, a.k.a. Cas, Peter Iga, Cars, and Igam ambushed the cops at 7:25 a.m. The rebels used automatic rifles and grenade.

Limmong described the trail as a perfect site for an ambush, because the upper side is a climbing beans plantation while the other side is a deep ravine where the three injured cops had fallen.

Limmong said PO2 Victor Dawong was earlier reported as missing, but he reported the following day to the police station with slight injuries. He said Dawong crawled away for shield thinking that his team was overpowered by the attackers. Limmong said the cops were at first surprised which led to the immediate death of the three but the other cops tried to fight back after gaining their post.

He said most of the policemen are from Ifugao too like the NPA rebels. They are members of the Ifugao Provincial Safety Company, but Limmong said one cop is from Bontoc, Mt. Province, while the team leader (Lauro) who was killed is from Cruz, La Trinidad, Benguet.

The cadavers of the victims were already brought to their respective houses while the other four cops were released from hospital and were given recognition awards by the Police regional director Benjamin Magalong.
