THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), through its Cordillera field office, announced the expansion of the Social Pension Program for indigent senior citizens for 2013.

DSWD Regional Director Leonardo Reynoso said the expansion will add an additional 1,884 indigent senior citizens to the existing 6,328 grantees.

The director also disclosed another 878 seniors were added to the roster of beneficiaries in the last quarter of 2012 with availability of additional support.

This number brings the total beneficiaries to 9,090 across the region with Abra posting the highest number at 2,606 grantees.

Reynoso said the release of the stipends for the first quarter is slated on the first week of March. He said the DSWD eyes the improvement of program processes, systems, and payout schemes especially in the remotest areas of the region.

Pursuant to the Expanded Senior Citizen’s Act of 2010, the Social Pension Program for indigent senior citizens grants a qualified beneficiary of a P500 monthly stipend to augment daily subsistence and medical needs.

The DSWD guidelines provide the program is for frail or sickly senior citizens who are not pensioners of insurance providers such as the Social Security System and Government Service Insurance System, among others. (Joanne Namnama G. Parrocha)
