LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Chief Inspector Byron Allatog takes over the reins from Valley Top cop Richard Albon in simple ceremonies Friday morning at the Lednicky Hall.

Allatog is a member of Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) class 2001 and was formerly was the chief of the Public Information Office (PIO) of the PNP Cordillera.

Allatog said he will focus on the strengthening of the barangay forces, which are partners of the police in peacekeeping.

He added: “I will continue the existing programs of the previous chief and possibly add more if needed.”

In December, Mayor Greg Abalos sought the change the ranking of the Valley’s top cop to superintendent aiming to have the incoming chief of police carry the title.

Allatog said additional personnel for the Valley office have already been requested to the provincial director and is a requisite when population grows for any area.

Abalos has been preparing for the change in command as the term of Albon was set to expire December 31.

Abalos said the request for additional police force has long been overdue in the municipality with a ratio of 1:500 at present. Ideally, there should be one policeman to a 250 population.

La Trinidad is the center of Benguet as it is the capital town. It has a mixed population. When the population is high, the crime rate is also high. Its population is 111,035 with an average monthly crime rate of 59.52 percent.

Allatog said laws on gambling in the Valley will also be implemented and monitored to keep illegal activities at bay.

“I am banking on the support of the local government unit, the barangay as well as the private sector,” he said.
