Bacolod scoring ace leads Batang Gilas squad

BACOLOD City's Samjosef Belangel, a high-scoring youth player now with Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eaglets, will be at the forefront of the Philippine basketball team that will compete in the SEABA Under-16 tournament to be held in Cagayan de Oro City next month.

Standing a shade below six feet, the 15-year-old Belangel, who will be 16 by June 27, drew attention after scoring 99 points in a game in Iloilo City. The son of Sammy and Mayet Rasmo Belangel also scored 85 while playing for Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

Also making it to the team, coached by Michael Oliver of Far Eastern University, are Jed Colonia, Gian Mamuyac, Ralph Escalona, Juan Gomez de Liano, Gillian Flores, Rhayyan Amsali, Sean Dave Ildefonso, Romulo Berjay, Will Gozum, Jonas Tibayan, and Kris Harvey Pagsanjan.


Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas Executive Director Sonny Barrios said the Under-16 teams from Brunei, Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia have confirmed participation.

SJ started playing organized basketball with Eliakim Learning School in the BUS Group 10-Under competition, transferred and played at University of St. La Salle, then to St. Joseph's Academy in Iloilo City, and Tay Tung where he led Bacolod City for the Batang Pinoy 3-on-3 title. (HGD)
