Batch 2010-2014 survives-A A +A

THE St. John’s Institute (SJI) Batch 2010-2014 started slow losing the opening set, 14-25 before pulling off a 25-18, 25-13 winner over Aspirants in the next two at the opening of the 3rd SJI Volleyball Friendship Cup last Saturday at the Msgr. John Liu Activity Center.
Led by setter Angel Sy, quicker Dorothy Ortega, hitters Natasha Escares, Marichi Maligmat, Nicole Jison, Kimberly Conde and Celine Infante. The aggressive Aspirants took advantage of Batch 2010-2014’s lack of cohesion to control set 1.
But the Bianca Lizares-led Batch 2010-2014 and setter Isabelle Juson got their acts together and displayed great blocking and net attacks.
Kathleen Tan, Rosel Sy and Juralie Lio have notable offensive strikes and defensive stops while Rica Bayhon and Stephanie Salazar have a great job for the alumni's back line.
Lizares’ College of St. Benilde teammate Camille Gequillana entered in the third set adding more firepower for its initial victory.
Defending Nopsscea secondary girls champion varsity team made a short workout of the newly-formed 2009 and earlier teams in straight sets 25-11, 25-9.
Varsity’s offense, led by setter Catherine Pollentes, spikers Therese Maravilla, Faye Ruth de lumen, Patricia Escares, Hannah Infante, MM Maligmat and Martha Araneta, was too much for the off-form alumni squad.
The unpredictable plays of the young volleybelles proved to be effective against the alumni as its hitters took turns and its setters set up each other for more attacks.
Meanwhile, SJI Moms have an outstanding debut in the tournament beating fellow newcomer Faculty in a close two sets, 25-21, 25-20.
The Mommies, spearheaded by Carmela Gamboa, Mitch Gatcheco, Jen Au, Cindy Go, Mabelle Yee and Andrea Ibewere, were better prepared than the Faculty composed of Amber Aguilar, Pamela Sarciban, Jenny Villeran, Jaaziel Abellana and Sara Amor Gustilo. (HGD)
