A FORMER point guard for University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) and a center for West Negros University (WNU) are among the 95 applicants for the 2014 Gatorade Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Annual Draft on August 24 at Robinsons Midtown Manila.
Playmaker Alwin Elinon, 27, of Cadiz City and 6'6” slotman Raul Suyod of Bago City are among the hopefuls for the country’s premier professional basketball league.
The six-foot guard who saw action for Rizal Technological University in the NCAA and the PBA D-League suited up for the Rams under coach Ireneo Morales in the 2007 season of the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association (Nopsscea).
Former Mustangs’ bigman Suyod played in 2009 Nopsscea season under former Mustangs mentor Troy Sarabia before he was recruited by University of the Philippines and played for Coach Manny Dandan, who once coached University of St. La Salle.
Suyod was one of the main guys inside the shaded area who helped WNU snatch its 11th Nopsscea Men’s Basketball title.
As a Fighting Maroon, Suyod averaged 7.07 points in 14 games in UAAP Season 75, hauled almost six boards per outing and blocked a shot every game.
Suyod improved in his sophomore year connecting an average of 10.54 points in 13 games while earning a playing time of 26 minutes per game compared to only 18 the previous year. He also grabbed nearly 12 rebounds, issued an assist, and had two blocks each game.
In the D-League, Suyod scored an average of 14.7 points, 11 rebounds, and a block during his stint at Derulo Accelero Oilers.
Elinon and Suyod are the new hopefuls from Negros Occidental who want to follow the footsteps of former Mustang Nonoy Baclao, USLS Stinger Jeff Chan, James Yap of Bacolod Tay Tung High School, Mark Yee of UNO-R, and Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod’s Noli Locsin and Boyet Fernandez, among others.
