TWO to tie, three to win with 5.9 seconds left, Barangay 10 center Eugene Jalandoni was left open after his screen and heaved a desperate triple which found its mark before the buzzer sounded.

Pandemonium broke loose as Mambuloc came from behind to snatch the 8th Monico Cup U21 title with a 73-72 win over top dog Barangay 18 on Sunday at Bays Center in Bacolod City.

Mambuloc trailed all the way, 11-22 in the first canto and 28-38 at half despite outscoring its superior adversary, 17-16 in the second quarter.

Allen de la Gente, Mark de Real and James Doromal managed to lead 20-18 in the third but still behind, 48-56. With 1:33 in the fourth, De la Gente hit a triple to tie at 68-all.

Barangay 18 guard Joemar Linga countered with his own from the arc, 71-68 and De la Gente scored on drive, 71-70. Kim Bryan Dimaranan split his charities with 7.3 ticks left, 72-70.

Barangay 10 called for a timeout with 5.9 seconds but was extended by technical difficulties as the electronic scoreboard went off. It took more than five minutes to restore giving the Mambuloc boys enough time to set a play.

Ironically, Barangay 18 were contented of waiting instead of plotting its defensive move. When play resumed, De Real got the leather, was pressured and forced to pass to Jalandoni who provided the screen.

With time expiring, the reluctant slotman, who previously missed several tip-ins and follow-ups under the board, let go a desperate heave which swished through the net.

De la Gente topscored with 25 points, De Real has 17, both Doromal and Angelo Delada added 12 each all from the arc for the new champions.

Kamiel Villoria scored 18, Nike Montalvo chipped in 15 and Dimaranan collected 12 for a losing effort.

Barangay 19 settled for third after beating Singcang, 86-69. De la Gente was voted Most Valuable Player.

Mayor Monico Puentevella were joined by Councilors Claudio Puentevella, Wilson Gamboa Jr. and El Cid Familiaran during the awarding rites. (HGD)
