GERMANY scored its fourth World Cup title via a late one-nil escape from Argentina on Monday at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It marked the first time a European team won in South American soil.

But Mario Goetze was left open minutes before end of the second extra time to lift the Germans for the crown. Both sides played excellent football which ended in a scoreless draw in regulation as well as in the first half of the extension period.

The prestigious World Cup 18-carat trophy is within reach of Lionel Messi and his Argentinian teammates who missed several goal opportunities in regulation. They paid heavily for not making it.

For Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella, a director of Fifa TV and Marketing Committee, the just-concluded football championship was a great finals.

“It’s a pure joy and I’m happy for Germany. They deserved the victory but it’s a sad fate for Messi. I’m just glad he won the ‘Golden Ball’ award,” Puentevella said.

“Football is really teamwork. That's the essence of the world’s No.1 sports,” the Fifa official said. “We're all lucky to witness this championship.”

Puentevella, who also attended the Fifa Congress last month, said that as one of the officials in the highest international governing body of football, he will be working hard alongside with the Philippine Football Federation in strengthening the grassroots development program of this discipline in the country.

Along this program are coaches and refereeing seminars around the country to further upgrade the technical capabilities of our football officials.
