LAST year's runner-up Barangay 19 got the axe as Barangay 18 made the move in the fourth quarter and took the first semi final slot with a 98-86 win in the 8th Monico Cup basketball tournament last weekend at Bays Center in Bacolod City.
Barangay 10 lived up to its billing, hacking out a 79-73 victory over a much-improved Handumanan, 79-73 while Singcang upset Barangay 35 of Maui Huelar, 70-63.
Barangay 19 was leading 66-63 at the end of the third but a 10-0 spurt by the trio of Dimaranan, Montalvo and Toral at the start of the last canto gave Barangay 18 enough boost to coast away.
At 86-72 with five minutes remaining, Barangay 18 continued the onslaught with Javelosa and Villoria holding the fort until the buzzer.
Barangay 10 surged to a 27-15 first quarter lead and never looked back as star guard Boy de la Gente hit 15 in the initial canto and finished with 25 points.
Handumanan trailed 49-63 in the third and failed to surmount a rally giving the Mambuloc boys the second semis spot.
Singcang relied on the duo of Solomon and Jamora who combined for 49 points to derail Barangay 35's Alunan Baybay cagers represented mostly by UNO-Rians which led 20-17 in the first.
A 31-21 run in the second quarter pushed Singcang for a 48-41 halftime bubble and survived the recovery attempt of Barangay 35 to salvaged its game.
On Sunday, Barangay 19 nipped Barangay 35 in the losers bracket, 75-72, to keep its hope alive for the fourth semifinal slot. It was close all the way with Barangay 35 getting the first at 17-16.
Barangay 19 bounced back in the second with a 25-16 splurge, taking the half, 41-33. It held on to a 56-54 lead in the third and finished off Huelar's charges with a 19-18 closure.
Remaining games pit Handumanan against Barangays 19 and 35 hoping to score a win twice to join the Top Four.
