ROYAL Paddle Table Tennis Club (RPTTC)-Visayan Maritime Academy Global College emerged as champions in the just-concluded 1st Sun Yat Sen Table Tennis Tournament held June 27 to 29 in Iloilo City.

The tournament’s elimination round was participated by 15 teams and played at the Sun Yat Sen High School Auditorium while the championship was staged at SM City Iloilo.

Grouped in a tough bracket, the Bacoleños came out strong and outplayed their opponents. RPTTC-VMA Global College was bracketed with host Sun Yat Sen-Team A composed of National PRISAA first runner-up players from John B. Lacson Maritime University-Iloilo, Central Philippine University (CPU) High School, and Antique Province-Team B.

En route the finals, RPTTC-VMA subdued easily the tough CPU College team in the quarterfinals and faced the Antique side in the semis. Veteran players Arnie Uy and Marc Angelo Peñaranda scored significant victories to send their team to the finals.

The finals turned out to be the rematch between RPTTC-VMA and Sun Yat Sen Team-A wherein the Bacoleño tandem of Steven Gonzaga and Ryan Buenaventura made an astonishing comeback to overcome their opponents and steal the title. They went home with a cash prize of P8,000 and a trophy.

The Bacolod team was co-sponsored by Dr. Carlitos Orola of VMA Global College and Francis Jalandoon of Green Lantern Table Tennis Club La Carlota City.

Organizing the tournament is Arnel Lanaria alongside the Sun Yat Sen High School Alumni Association.
