‘Wesley So can’t be blamed’-A A +A
Friday, June 13, 2014
“WE CAN’T blame Wesley So,” says Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella, a former commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission, on the recent news that the young Filipino Grandmaster will shift allegiance to the US Chess Federation.
“He's not only looking for greener pastures but a future for him and his family. United States is hungry for chess players. There's none after Bobby Fischer,” Puentevella said.
“And, there may be more to follow him (So) if, we don't take care of our athletes,” the local chief executive warned.
According to an online news report, So has moved to US to study at Webster University, and had written the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) informing his plans to move to the US Chess Federation.
The report, however, said that NCFP claimed that So had not personally furnished them the copy of his letter, adding they could have worked out the matter.
With this current scenario, the Philippines will most likely lose a potential and future world chess champion. (HGD)
