Regional cage tourney looms-A A +A

TWELVE years after the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) ended its show in 2002, a group named Basketball Philippines will try to revive the concept of staging a regional basketball tournament.
Interviewed over dyEZ’s Aksyon Isports on Sunday, Alfredo “Fred” Advincula, Basketball Philippines chief operation officer and founder, said that their goal is simply to bring professional basketball back to the people.
“Unlike the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) where teams represent various companies, this league will represent a particular city, province or island in the country. The league aims at bringing basketball closer to the people,” Advincula said. “With PBA, a fan should be in Manila to be able follow and watch his favorite player and team.”
Basketball Philippines is eyeing to begin the season with a minimum of eight teams from potential cities and provinces like Bacolod, Iloilo, Dumaguete, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Masbate, Legazpi, San Fernando, Batangas, Quezon City, and Metro Manila.
“It is highly preferred that investors or groups will come from the team’s cities for efficiency and ease of operations. In Bacolod, we have already at least two potential investors who want to purchase a team," he said.
Advincula also stressed that they aim to see all teams look great, be a source of pride for their regions, and be an integral part of their respective communities.
Asked how long they project the league to stay, Advincula conservatively replied that with their organization’s stability, the league will stay for decades.
Other objectives of the league are to provide a venue for professional basketball talents to showcase their skills, particularly those who are not given the chance to enter the PBA.
